Fixed Mindset VS Growth Mindset
Applying a Growth Mindset in the workplace
What is a Fixed Mindset?
The Fixed Mindset refers to our own view of our abilities, and believing that our intelligence, talent, and other qualities are fixed and unchangeable. For example, if we score low on an exam or test, we may think we will never be good at the subject.
What is a Growth Mindset?
The Growth Mindset focuses on potential and does not limit anyone based on their current knowledge or level of understanding. This mindset encourages us to view our ‘failures’ as opportunities for growth. There is always room to learn and improve.
Why is it important to adopt a Growth Mindset in the workplace?
Carol Dweck, who coined the term ‘Growth Mindset’, studied a group of students who underwent brain scans while reviewing mistakes they made on an exam. Those with a fixed mindset showed no new brain activity. Those with a growth mindset showed processing activity, which facilitated growth & learning.
A growth mindset is essential for a thriving and healthy business. Employees are able to achieve much more when there are no limits placed on their potential.
Important considerations for using a Growth Mindset in the workplace:
Skills can be developed and improved through effort.
Challenges and obstacles are opportunities for learning.
Set SMART targets and recognise progress towards the goal.
We should not place limits on our own or others’ potential.
Do not assume you know the capabilities of others.
Feedback is needed for growth and improvement.
Instead of ‘I can’t do this.’, say ‘I can’t do this YET.’
